چکیده

The environmental satellite ENVISAT was successfully launched by the European Space Agency ESA in March 2002 and carries among other sensors a radar altimeter which is capable of measuring the height between sea surface and satellite with a precision of a few centimetres. Unfortunately, radar altimeters of this kind exhibit a bias which cannot be determined à priori with help of laboratory measurements. Consequently, an elaborate field campaign is to be conducted in order to recover the altimeter’s offset. This report portrays the efforts carried out to measure this bias with help of high-sea buoys which are equipped with GPS-receivers and presents important results.

On the Future of Radar Altimeter Calibration Using Gnss Buoys

The environmental satellite ENVISAT was successfully launched by the European Space Agency ESA in March 2002. An elaborate field campaign was conducted in the Mediterranean Sea near the coast of Menorca Island in order to recover the altimeter’s bias using high sea GPS buoys. After a brief presentation of this campaign including major results for the sea surface heights, a number of questions r...

Sea Level Determination Experiences at Cape of Begur Using Altimetry and Tide Gauges

Three Begur Cape experiences on radar altimeter calibration and marine geoid mapping made on 1999, 2000 and 2002 are overviewed. The marine geoid has been used to relate the coastal tide gauge data from l’Estartit harbour to off-shore altimetric data. The necessity to validate and calibrate the satellite’s altimeter due to increasing needs in accuracy and long term integrity implies establishin...

Altimeter Bias Determination Using Two Years of Transponder Observations

Satellite altimetry provides a precise measure of the vertical distance of the satellite borne altimeter to the instantaneous sea surface. The accuracy of this distance depends on the calibration of the altimeter, the quality of the reflecting target and the proper estimate of path delay. The general design characteristics for absolute altimeter calibration imply a large number of measurements ...

Comparison of the Envisat Waveform Retrackers over Inland Waters

Since the launch of ENVISAT satellite in 2002, the Radar Altimetry Mission provides systematic altimeter observations of the Earth surface. The ENVISAT Geophysical Data Records products contain, over all type of surfaces, altimeter ranges derived from four specialized retrackers: Ocean, Ice-1, Ice-2 and Sea-Ice retracker. Among the different goals of the ENVISAT Mission, one directly concerns l...

Envisat Ocean Altimetry Performance Assessment and Cross-calibration

Nearly three years of Envisat altimetric observations over ocean are available in Geophysical Data Record (GDR) products. The quality assessment of these data is routinely performed at the CLS Space Oceanography Division in the frame of the CNES Segment Sol Altimétrie et Orbitographie (SSALTO) and ESA French Processing and Archiving Center (F-PAC) activities. This paper presents the main result...
